CLARIFICATIONS & IRS RESOURCES
Expense rules differ by category. National food/clothing and out-of-pocket health care standards generally provide allowances without requiring proof of actual spending. Local housing and transportation generally use actual expenses or the standard, whichever is less, subject to justified exceptions. Different rules may apply to qualifying payment plans, including the six-year repayment rule. Amounts change; check the current standards for your household and location.
