CP2566R follows earlier notices about missing tax returns. The IRS has used income information reported by employers, financial institutions, and others to calculate tax, penalties, and interest. Without a response, it may apply some or all of your held refund toward that tax debt.
But the IRS’s proposed amount is not necessarily what you would owe after filing an accurate return. Its calculation may leave out deductions or credits you qualify for. Before accepting the proposed balance, review the notice carefully, pay attention to its response deadline, and understand your options.
